Saints and Sinner: Hamilton Bailey

2012
Modern surgery is so much a matter of teamwork that the concept of the great surgeon is now almost obsolete. It was different 50 years ago, when action in the operating theatre revolved around the major figure who undertook all responsibility and received all the glamour. The most famous surgeons were not always the most technically accomplished, however – it was often a matter of a dominant personality rather than gifted hands. hamilton Bailey was perceived as a great surgeon although he was not particularly skilful. his fame rests on his original ideas, his qualities as a teacher and, above all, on his textbooks which although constantly rewritten and updated still bear his name and are sold worldwide. of all those who have written about surgery, hamilton Bailey is still, by far, the most widely read.
