New Ideas in Calorimetry

The hadron calorimeter for the CERN ISR experiment R807 is of the fission compensating type, using 238U as absorber. The possibility of replacing part of the uranium by more easily accessible material without destroying the good properties of a pure uranium-scintillator calorimeter has been investigated.
