The paper presents an overview of the basic concepts and theories of leadership and their application in modern organizations. We meet the new, fifth generation, Generation Z, which is entering the labor market. Their impact on the work environment, the challenges that human resources management faces and the importance of managing employees of different ages, values and skills are some aspects that are addressed in this paper. An empirical study that was conducted on students of the Faculty of Economics & Business in Zagreb who belong to generation Z and have not yet attended courses related to human resources and leadership. Research shows that their perception of desirable leadership traits, from which traits may benefit from their leader and from which they may not. The results of the research showed that the leadership qualities they want from their leader are similar to their characteristics. In addition, they have shown an awareness of their shortcomings that they want, under the mentorship of their leaders, to turn into an advantage.
