ONE-YEAR CHARACTERIZATION OF SEA AMBIENT NOISE IN A COASTAL MARINE PROTECTED AREA: A MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR INSHORE MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

2008
Sea traffic noise characterizes the sea ambient noise (SAN) of coastal areas, mainly in the range below 1,000 Hz. The WWF-Natural Marine Reserve of Miramare is a small marine protected area located 8 km from the city of Trieste (North Adriatic Sea, Italy), an important seaport with ship traffic over 48 million tons. Nautical tourism is also practiced, especially during the summer season. This study aims to assess the extent of the anthropogenic noise pressure in the Reserve, looking at the relationships between boat traffic and underwater noise.
