Immunopathology and Immunotherapy for Breast Cancer

2020
Breast cancer is the most common cancer-related cause of death among women worldwide. There are several therapeutic choices for its treatment, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Despite all the advancements in these approaches, the treatment of patients with breast cancer is still an issue. It has become evident that the immune system has a significant role in the prevention, progression, and treatment of cancer. Thus, improving its power to treat cancers is a fact that has led to the development of immune-based anticancer drugs. Immunotherapy has shown promising results in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. In this chapter, we review the role of the immune system in breast cancer and different methods of immunotherapy, including targeted therapy using monoclonal antibodies (mAb), vaccines, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and adoptive T-cell therapy for patients with breast cancer.
