Mutual coupling reduction of a 2.6 GHz Dual-Element MIMO Antenna System with EBG structures

2014
This paper presents new Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structures for a 2.6 GHz Dual-Element MIMO Antenna System. The structure derives from the traditional mushroom, but with the unique shape of the patch, the change of via's position, and the inverted T shape layout of the structure unit cells. The via's position is optimized in the HFSS software, and the simulated results shows that the mutual coupling is largely improved with the S21 parameter as significant −32dB. In addition, the return loss and the radiation characteristic still remain in the reasonable level, proving that the EBG structures are effective and reliable for the MIMO antenna system.
