Inferred provenance of the building materials of the so-called «Tomba della Medusa» of Arpi (Southern Italy)

1996
This work deals with the archaeometry of the so-called «Tomba della Medusa» (Arpi, Southern Italy), which was built in the HI Cent. b.C. Limestone blocks, bricks, mortar and plaster are the main building materials. The limestones, Miocene and Jurassic in age, were probably imported from the southern slopes of the Gargano hills, where a large ancient quarry, besides scattered traces of excavation, was found. The bricks were imported from the Vulture volcano area, probably from the Lavello-Venosa zone. Mortar and plaster were made using local waste material.
