Are there any psychological impacts in patients after spontaneous pneumothorax

2017
Spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) is usually seen in young, male smokers. Pathophysiology of PSP remains unclear, also the number of research concerning emotional status are scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate psychological factors associated with SP. Method: Participants were recruited from a Facebook dedicated pneumothorax group. We used Google forms for creating a form containing 16 questions that were asked concerning the nature of the disease, medical care, and persistence of an acheand existence of an anxiety. Results: 63 answers were collected. 57.6 % of them were smoking. Mean age of patient group was 28.7 years. Male to female ratio was 0.55. The mean body mass index was 20.5.92% of patients had undergone an intercostal drainage (ICD) and the mean duration was 7.3 days. The recurrence of pneumothorax was observed on 66.6% in average delay of 6.63 months. 57.9 % attest that they worry about recurrence every day while only 17.2% have a rare worry about recurrence. Their haunt are recurrence of pain 39 (69%), ICD 28(50%) and surgery 28(50%).87.3% attest that they kept residual pain around the thorax by 62.3%, on the scar in 37.7% of cases. This ache occurred on consequent to performing effort on 60% of participant and concomitant with the fear of recidivism on 18 % of case. Half of the participants attest that the pain was continuous. Conclusion: This form was a mean of screening which showed a high prevalence of residual pain that could be linked mainly to anxiety. This study should be put in practice Involving psychologists in order to evaluate psychological factors associated with SP.
