This article provides information concerning septic shock. This condition is also known as septicaemia and bacteraemia and is potentially fatal. Key terms such as sepsis, bacteraemia and septicaemia are defined. A discussion concerning the pathophysiological changes occurring with septic shock is provided. The signs and symptoms are described and the management of the condition is highlighted. The role of the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner (HCA and AP) is addressed. The article emphasises the need for all staff to act quickly if sepsis has been suspected. A glossary of terms is provided.
