WAYSIDE TRUCK PERFORMANCE DETECTOR DEVELOPMENT

2001
This paper discusses the development of wayside detectors for use in assessing the dynamic performance and general condition of freight car and locomotive trucks operating in revenue service. The objective of the development was to improve safety of operations via automated wayside performance-based inspection systems and the development of performance-based criteria to improve and supplement existing maintenance policies and procedures. The application of improved inspection methodologies and the development of performance-based maintenance standards will enable railroads to improve the overall safety of operations, better manage their assets and improve their competitive position against other transportation modes.
