Growth stability of silicon whiskers

The effect of variations in whisker diameter on the stability of whisker growth is analyzed. The conditions of stable growth and the stabilization mechanism are considered. Growth stability is shown to be due to the thermodynamic equilibrium maintained by surface-tension forces.
