Mites comprise a large group of Arthropoda belonging to the sub-class Acari and the class Arachnida. The house dust mites in turn belong to the family Pyroglyphidae, and the examples most frequently associated with allergic sensitisation in European countries include Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae, D. microceras and Euroglyphus maynei.
