Melting characteristics, glass-forming ability and stability of NiPdSi and NiPdTMSi alloys in the concentration range 10–22 at.% Si

1990
Abstract The melting range, the glass-forming ability and the T g and T x characteristics of a large group of NiPdSi and NiPdTMSi alloys were determined by using differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray analysis. As a result, the constitution of the liquidus surface of the NiPdSi system was determined. Specifically, a “dimple” in the vicinity of Pd 0.74 Ni 0.10 Si 0.16 composition was discovered on this surface. The dimple, having a minimum T s /T L ≌ 760°C/820°C , is useful for the development of brazing filler metals. An extended concentration region containing compositions which may be transformed into the amorphous state by rapid solidification technology was determined. Finally, the melting characteristics of more than a dozen multicomponent NiPdTMSi alloys are given. A group of new brazing filler compositions was developed for applications as diverse as brazing of cemented carbides and manufacturing of high temperature honeycomb structures.
