BM-CVI: A Backup Method Based on a Cross-Version Integration Mechanism

2007
Data backup is the foundation of data protection, and improved continually on the aspects of backup performance, restore performance, redundancy of backup data and use efficiency of media space. But all existing backup method usually can not harmonize these aspects mentioned above. This paper presents a novel backup method: a backup method based on a cross-version integration mechanism. It explores a suitable approach which harmonizes these aspects mentioned above. BM-CVI uses differential incremental backup policy to complete data backup, so it has the best backup performance. Based on the cross-version integration mechanism, BM-CVI chooses appropriate redundancy degree between appointed upper limit and lower limit, and integrates data in order to efficiently use media space. When using random access media, BM-CVI can achieve the best restore performance by version integration mechanism.
