In the analysis of 224 early gastric cancer cases that were confirmed by surgical pathologic examination, the following resuls were obtained: (1) men were more frequently affected than vomen with peak incidence in their 40's to 50's (2) the lesions were detected by gastrofiberscope in 98.7% of cases, while the diagnosis as early cancer was made in 56.2%. (3) the diagnostic accuracy was affected by the size, reaching 71.9% for lesions larger than 5 cm and 52.9% for smaller ones, (4) the diagnostic accuracy was influenced by the location, being highest (56.9 %) for fundic cancers and lowest (43.5%) for lesions on the greater curvature aspect . (5)morphologic type Ilc was the most frequent (49.4%) form and cases of type IIb+ IIa showed the greatest (66.7%) diagnostic accuracy, (6) the biopsy-positive rate was 92.9% at the first examination and can be increased up to 100% when the examination was repeated three times.
