Geometry and Texture Coupled Generalization of Urban Buildings

2011
A novel element FEdge, containing geometric and textured information, is proposed for geometry and texture coupled generalization of urban buildings, in relation to urban legibility of roads, districts, and landmarks. In order to take into account geometric characteristics of different footprints better, we cluster building footprints by creating their positive buffers to preserve roads at desired levels of detail. For each cluster, due to similarity with district, the regular shaped buffer polygon is used to aid extracting the generalized footprint. To enhance the authenticity of the generalized texture, a factor of texture importance is set to each vertex before the combination. By applying a Buffer-Tree to store the generated multi-resolution urban building models, an error controlled real-time visualization of large urban scene is implemented.
