Most patients receive several different drugs during their hospitalization, many concomitantly. No nurse can afford to ignore the possible physical and pharmacological drug interactions that can and do occur. Many drugs are given intravenously. They are potent agents, and combination therapy is frequent. The nursing staff in our cardiac care unit at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, identified 22 commonly used drugs and asked the hospital's Drug Information Center for data on interactions.
