Viscosity of turkey blood: Rheology of nucleated erythrocytes

1970
Abstract Viscosity measurements were made on suspensions of turkey erythrocytes in plasma, serum, and Ringer solution at shear rates from 0.01 to 208 sec −1 and with cell percentages varying from 0–85%. Erythrocyte aggregation by plasma proteins was absent in 13 of 16 turkeys studied, but present in three turkeys with elevated fibrinogen and β-globulin concentrations. The deformability of turkey erythrocytes has been demonstrated by comparing the viscosity of Ringer suspensions before and after hardening in aldehyde. At 85% cells, the viscosity of Ringer suspension of turkey erythrocytes is higher than the values obtained in mammalian species, suggesting a lower deformability of the nucleated turkey erythrocytes.
