Multi-dimensional modeling of the solar wind—LISM interaction including neutrals: a Boltzmann approach
2008
The interaction of the solar wind with the local interstellar medium (LISM) is investigated on the basis of a time-dependent 2D model in which the plasma is described hydrodynamically and the interstellar neutrals by a Boltzmann equation modified by charge exchange. This computationally intensive calculation yields results qualitatively in accord with the simpler Pauls et al. [1995] 2-fluid model, thus validating a careful hydrodynamic approach. The results of simulations for a 2-shock model and a 1-shock model are described and compared and some observationally distinguishable characteristics are identified.
