Microstructure and mechanical properties of gas tungsten arc welded Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy rods

2019
Abstract Large diameter rods of Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy were gas tungsten arc welded. The microstructural evolution was studied by electron microscopy techniques and its impact on the mechanical and functional response of the welded joints was assessed. The fusion zone exhibited a mixture of α and β phases, while the base material was composed only by the parent β phase. The refined grain structure of the fusion zone increased the material ductility and can improve the functional fatigue resistance of the welded joint when compared to the original base material.
