The effect of nitroglycerin, Intensain (3-β-dicthylamino-ethyl)-4-methyl-7-carbethoxy-methoxy-2-oxo-[1,2 chromene]), Isoptin (α-isopropyl-α [N-methyl — N — homoveratryl)gamma-aminopropyl]-3, 4-dimethoxyphenylacetonitrile), and papaverine on the coronary blood flow in man was studied. Coronary flow was measured by the coincidence-counting system using rubidium 84, a positron emitter. Nitroglycerin, Intensain, and Isoptin produced a significant increase in myocardial flow in individuals without evidence of coronary artery disease; these drugs failed to raise coronary blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease. Papaverine did not significantly alter coronary blood flow. Clinically, the drugs under study have been reported to relieve angina pectoris. The results indicate, therefore, that the improvement of angina pectoris need not depend on an increase in coronary blood flow.
