Seventeen children 9 females 8 males admitted to the Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit between 1989 and 1999 with the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease were evaluated retrospectively Ulcerative colitis was found in 14 children and Crohn s disease in three The mean age of the study population was 10 1 years The mean age at the time diagnosis was 9 9 years for patients with ulcerative colitis as it was 1 2 6 years for patients with Crohn s disease The average duration of symptoms before diagnosis was 8 2 months 6 3 months for ulcerative colitis 20 4 months for Crohn s disease A family history of inflammatory bowel disease was present in two patients Rectal bleeding 82 diarrhea 71 abdominal pain 41 and weight loss 35 were the major initial symptoms The percentiles for height and weight were below 3 percentile for age in 7 41 and 9 53 children respectively Physical examination revealed hepatomegaly 12 arthritis 24 anal fissure 6 and erythema nodosum 6 The laboratory data showed anemia 65 leukocytosis 59 thrornbocytosis 35 increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate 88 increased C reactive protein concentration 72 hypoalbuminemia 35 hypocalcemia 29 increased transaminase levels 6 and p ANCA positivity 23 Entamoeba histolytica and Clostridium difficile toxin A were found in 18 and 23 of stool samples respectively The patients wire treated with salazopyrine mesalasine prednisolone azathioprine and cyclosporine Key words: Inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis crohn s disease childhood
