EnglishBenchmarking is a technique to evaluate very quickly the performance of a computer. Very often, tables are published in which different computers are compared using the results obtained through a given benchmark. However, to interpret correctly those results, it is important to understand the characteristics of the used benchmark as well as the characteristics of the environment in which the measurements were carried out. This paper is an introduction to the concept of benchmarking as a technique for computer evaluation. The general characteristics which should posses a benchmark are described as well as the particular characteristics of the more frenquently used benchmarks (whetstones, dhrystones, livermoore loops, linkpack, SPEC, SLALOM, Perfect Club, CPEP, NAS).
