Importance of Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma in War Surgery

2015
Trauma is the most important cause of mortality in war. Gunshot and stab wounds are held responsible for 49% of all deaths. The most common cause of early death is hemorrhagic shock which should be noted that develops after injury. The determination of the current clinical condition and knowing the source of bleeding is important on the life-threatening chest, abdominal and extremity traumas. It should be noted that the diagnosis of the injury using portable ultrasound equipment could be lifesaving in the battlefield or in the pre-hospital time. For this purpose, ultrasound procedure was defined as Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (E-FAST). Portable ultrasound and its applications will be even more important in the future. Because they have been used in the differential diagnosis of avoidable deaths induced by trauma in the war for deciding required surgical procedure for surgeons
