관객 참여를 기반에 둔 큐레토리얼 실천: 2012 부산비엔날레 《배움의 정원》을 중심으로

2020
This study analyzes, through the qualitative research method of ethnography, the 2012 Busan Biennale Garden of Learning, which put audience participation at the forefront of the exhibition production process. Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews to uncover the exhibition’s production process, we scrutinize the roles of the Learning Council, the exhibition’s audience participatory group which closely collaborated with the exhibition director. The Learning Council agonized over the exhibition’s direction and display methods, intervened in the artists’ production process, and planned and implemented education programs through months of preparation leading up to the exhibition’s opening. We thus affirm that the Learning Council played the critical role as a co-creator of the exhibition production process. Audience participation as demonstrated in Garden of Learning did not stop at a superficial slogan or concept; it was indeed a curatorial practice that marshaled the public to create and share stories of ‘now’ through ‘here’.
