Second generation PEM fuel cells

2007 
Fuel cell systems for traction applications today are still dominated by fuel cells with sulfonated membranes operating in the temperature range of 70 °C to 90 °C. Volkswagen AG is following a long-term strategic perspective of using a phosphoric acid impregnated membrane enabling an operating temperature of up to 160 °C. The idea is to enable a pronounced cost reduction by a reduced system complexity.
