Bilayer formation and its spectral behavior of double-chain amphiphiles having cinnamate units

Double-chain amphiphiles having one or two cinnamate units as a chromophore were synthesized. These cinnamate amphiphiles formed bilayers in water. UV-absorption λ max of these amphiphiles in bilayer state showed a large blue shift from that of their dissolved state in organic solvent. Degree of blue shift was proved to be a reflection of packing of cinnamate units defined by the structure of amphiphiles.
