Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging on Voltage Profiles and Unbalance on Low Voltage

2019
Public interest in electric vehicles is rising with continuous development of this technology followed by global-warming awareness. Charging these vehicles introduces additional loading stress and could negatively impact the power quality parameters, especially if charged during daily peak-period. This paper investigates the effect of different load phasing and EV penetrations on voltage variations and unbalance. First part of analysis is based on examining the effects of different load distribution per phase on four base scenarios with no electric vehicles involved. The second part of analysis consists of nine scenarios with 10%, 20% and 50% of EV penetration in grid-to-vehicle mode. Analysis was performed using DIgSLENT Power Factory software. Seven scenarios remained within allowed limits from standards, while others violated at least one parameter. Results also showed that phase and point of connection are vital when it comes to impacting the voltage variation and unbalance.
