Asphodelus tenuifolius (Onion Weed): Medicinal plant of Thar Desert of Rajasthan

Asphodelus tenuifolius fam: Liliaceae, known locally as pyazi, is a common xerophytic weed found in thar desert of Rajasthan. Synonym Asphodelus clavatus Roxb. The seed oil, due to its high linoleic acid (60–62%), is pharmacologically of therapeutic value in preventing atherosclerosis. It is used for colds and hemorrhoids, a febrifuge and also used for rheumatic pain. Seeds are also used as diuretic agent, healing wound and they are applied externally to ulcers and for inflamed parts. The botany, phytochemicals, pharmacological, traditional and therapeutic importance of the plant is discussed herein.
