Reframing Data as a Gift

In this talk, I use Mauss' theory of the gift in order to shift how we think about data sharing and data donation, particularly in the context of biomedical research. I argue that if we think of data as a gift, we can think of the role data can play in building relationships and exposing tensions and social hierarchies.
