Energy and Environmental Management in University: Case Study KMUTT, Thailand

2004
According to the energy and environment impacts resulting from the activities on educational institutions and others, the university activities on energy and environment have been concerned, these include energy conservation and environmental management for education and research. KMUTT is committed to the proper management of energy and environment and provides an energy and environmental management service through the Energy, Environment, Safety and Health Office (EESH). Proper management of energy or energy conservation have been done through Green University project supported by Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO).Environmental management in KMUTT have been concerned on Chemical and Waste management .Chemical management system within KMUTT have been developed by using KMUTT Chemical database. The system ,procedures and manuals for chemical management have been developed and implemented for ten of pilot laboratories within the university .To decrease the environmental pollution and minimize the risk of students, staff and members of public, laboratory waste management has been set up within KMUTT and aim to play an important role to maintain a safe and environmentally responsible within the university. Chemical and Laboratory waste management system within KMUTT has been established since 1999 according to research grant from the Thailand Research Fund of the master plan to establish a National Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC). The system, procedures and manuals for the laboratory waste management and treatment were developed according to the Green University policy and standard practices. In this system, the laboratory wastes were separated to liquid and solid waste, the liquid waste was separated into 23 difference categories for storage and treatment according to the activities within KMUTT. The solid waste was separated into 5 groups and now are in the revised process. Waste minimization program has been set up and implemented in the pilot laboratory. Pilot laboratory has been successfully operated under the new developed system. The system evaluation shows implementation requires the cooperation and support of students, faculty and staff members. Training and preparation on the developed procedures and system have been given to majority of KMUTT staff. Nowaday, the energy and environmental management system have been implemented by 70% within KMUTT. And therefore, it is quite ready to expand the management system within KMUTT to cover all others in a near future. This paper describes the study and implementation experience on energy and environmental management in the university. As a result of this study, energy and environmental management within KMUTT can help to decrease the energy and environmental impacts and maintain a sustainable management for all staffs and public.
