Teaching about other cultures is difficult, for most of us do not know the contents of many cultures. Also, we are influenced by local and regional prejudices that may bias us against other cultures. How do we know, then, when we may be operating from ethnocentric perceptions? There are no quick, easy prescriptions for countering ethnocentrism in the English language arts classroom, but a reliable prescription against ignorance was provided, in Essay on Criticism by the poet Alexander Pope, when he advised.
