Numerical Simulation to Study Suspended Silt Impact on Marine Environments in Submarine Pipeline-laying Process

2011
Suspended silt which is raised from the bottom deposit in laying a submarine pipeline may exert its impact on water quality and marine creatures in the sea area where the pipeline is being laid.A 2D hydrodynamic model which is able to simulate the suspended silt transportation is set up for the relevant study when a submarine freshwater pipeline is being laid among Lincheng, the Xiazhi Island, and the Liuheng Island,in order to predict the intensity and the extend of the impact exerted by the raised silt, and to provide scientific basis for marine environment assessment. As it is shown in the computing results,(1) water quality in Segment 1 of the pipeline-laying area is impacted the most heavily relative to the other segments,(2) it is effected the least in Segment 2,and(3) it is relatively heavily effected in a small area surrounding to the pipeline landfall which is located in Segment 3.
