The High-5 Project: How Two Texas Companies and TXDOT Partnered to Apply High Performance Concrete Technologies to Replace one of the Largest Highway Interchanges in Texas, on a Fast Track Schedule

2006
Through cooperative teamwork and the desire to use the best technologies and methods possible, High Performance Concrete (HPC) played a key role in the successful “Fast Track” completion of one of the largest and most complex highway interchange projects in the US, more than one year ahead of schedule. This paper presents the utilization of HPC as a key part of the 500,000 cubic yards of concrete required to construct the Texas Department of Transportation’s High-5 Project located in Dallas, Texas, USA. Topics discussed include the aggressive “Fast Track” incentive contract and how this drove the use of technology, the HPC concrete performance criteria (plastic as well as hardened), materials optimization, HPC mix design development, mix design examples and performance results, maturity testing, lessons learned during the project and project results. It is our hope that this paper will provide others with information/ideas of value for future successful projects like High-5.
