High intensity crossFit training compared to high intensity swimming: A pre-post trial to assess the impact on body composition, muscle strength and resting energy expenditure

with multi-dimensional indexes of geriatric patient and, in particular, with nutritional status. Material and Methods: We enrolled 366 subjects (FyM; 251y115) with mean age 81.5 3.2 years. The Italian version of EFS was administrated to assess frailty. In addition, we collected data concerning cognitive status (Mini Mental State Examination), health (counting of diseases), functional independence (Barthel Index and Activities Daily Living), use of medications (counting of drugs/daily), nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment), mood (Geriatric Depression Scale), and functionality (Handgrip strength). Firstly, statistical analysis was carried out through the Pearson’s correlations (r), and after by a linear regression model, adjusted for age and sex. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant association between the EFS with all investigated areas (p <0.05). The analysis showed Pearson’s correlations between: EFS-MMSE r1⁄4 -0.228; EFS-number of diseases r1⁄4 +0120; EFS-Barthel index r1⁄4 -0,316; EFS-ADL r1⁄4 -0350; EFS-number of drugs r1⁄4 +0,167; EFS-MNA r1⁄4 -0502; EFS-GDS r1⁄4 -0422; EFS-Handgrip DX r1⁄4 -0.235. Regression analysis showed that the increase of a EFS’ point (increase in frailty), determined a decrease in the MNA of -0.46 points (p <0.001). Conclusions: This study shows for the first time the effectiveness of the Italian version of EFS to accurately identify every dimension of frailty. Moreover, as previously in the literature, the strong association between frailty and malnutrition has been confirmed.
