IT-Platform for Algorithm-Based Automation of Academic Study Program Development

2021
The academic study program development process of universities in Europe and around the world is following similar approaches. There exist several workflows, from four step approaches up to seven step approaches. All of them have similar procedures with added and deleted elements. Although these frameworks exist, universities are following their own strict rules for developing new curricula. These rules differ from each other. Applying their own curriculum development processes, the work is still be done manually. It is missing an automated engine to build up modular curricula in an intelligent way. This paper is focusing on the implementation of a concept for algorithm-based, automated curriculum development. To fulfill this task, a standardized process out of the existing approaches has been developed. In this concept, a methodology for the modularization of curriculum content was implemented. Therefore, a database model (knowledge-database) has been created. Combining these elements with artificial intelligence matching algorithms such as Natural Language Processing and an IT-platform based on open source modules leads to a suitable methodology for the implementation of an automated curriculum development process. Future research activities will focus on the development of a technological demonstrator for the described approach.
