Epipsammic diatoms as borers: an observation on calcareous sand grains

1988
Abstract SEM examination of intertidal calcareous sand grains from the inlet of the tidal lagoon Anse de Kernic, located on the northern coast of Brittany, indicates that some species of epipsammic diatoms are carbonate borers. Epipsammic diatoms that remain attached to the sand grains after washing, are found in cavities and depressions. Some of them, notably of the genus Cocconeis are found in characteristically shaped cavities which are interpreted as made by the diatoms themselves. The occurrence of the borings indicates that epipsammic diatoms can play a role in the weathering process of calcareous substrates.
