Towards Human-Centered Design of Workplace Health Stimulation Interventions: Investigation of Factors Contributing to Office Workers’ Exercise Behavior

2021
The gradual rise in workload and the penetration of labor-saving technology minimized physical activity in the working environment, which threaten office workers’ physical and psychological well-being. Promoting physical exercise at the office is a potential solution to this problem. In the current research, we investigated the determinants of exercise behavior in general and for office exercise behavior specifically. We developed an office exercise behavior questionnaire and collected data from 479 office-based workers in different countries through an online questionnaire. We performed exploratory factor analysis to find out the essential determinants and the underlying factors. Results indicated that a four-factor solution was supported by the data and these four factors were labelled Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation, Social Environment, and Job Environment. The current paper sets crucial steps towards human-centered design of effective exercise behavior stimulating interventions and behavior change systems by investigating factors contribute to office workers’ exercise behavior.
