2014
Objective To establish the effectiveness of an educational intervention aimed at mothers regarding Assessment of neonatal jaundice. Methods A randomized clinical trial was conducted in parallel groups. Were all eligible newborns and their mothers who met criteria selection. Whose intervention was based on the training of mothers in the method of digital pressure to assess jaundice visual scale according to Kramer. Therefore a semistructured questionnaire was applied which assessed whether mothers detected jaundice in newborns and visual areas of the Kramer scale were compromised. The data analysis was performed from all newborns whose transcutaneous bilirubin was greater than 12 mg / dl between the second or third day of life in the group of intervention and control group, by determining the ratio of the mothers who either answered in the first control that her newborn skin was yellow. Results We analyzed 186 term infants and their mothers, who signed informed consent was found that the additional educational intervention to standard does not alter the detection of clinically significant jaundice after discharge hospital compared to standard counseling. Conclusions mothers education is a valuable tool in preventing unfavorable outcomes, this study could not demonstrate significance difference that maternal training on how to assess for jaundice, favors diagnosis of jaundice. The control in the first 3-5 days of life of newborns with early discharge after delivery is an important strategy in the detection timely severe hyperbilirubinemia. Keywords clinically significant jaundice
