Harmonic Compensation Strategies Applied to Multifunctional Photovoltaic Inverters

The multifunctional photovoltaic inverter may not be able to fully compensate the harmonic currents of a nonlinear load, either because the various services that it may be performing in a certain moment, or because the increase of the load harmonic content. Therefore, it is found in the literature some compensation strategies that can be applied in those situations, such as selective and partial compensation. Despite the diversity of harmonic compensation strategies, it is important to compare them to understand their advantages and disadvantages under limited operating capability of the inverter. Therefore, this paper proposes to compare partial and selective harmonic current compensation strategies. In addition, a variant of these compensation approaches is introduced and compared to, which is the partial-selective compensation strategy. A case study is simulated to verify the impact of each compensation strategy on the grid power quality and the photovoltaic inverter effort in terms of thermal stress.
