A Review on the Reasons behind Treatment Failure in Clinical Cases of Bovine Mastitis

2011
Mastitis is a devastating disease responsible for huge economic losses to dairy farmers. Many clinical cases of mastitis fail to respond any treatment and permanent loss of the udder quarters occurs. There are several factors responsible for therapeutic failure in bovine mastitis. Factors related to microorganisms, pharmacokinetic limitations, udder structure and physiology are innate and hence their role can not be eliminated. But others, like faulty diagnosis, management and therapeutic approaches etc. can be corrected to improve the therapeutic outcome. The present review aims to describe in brief, important factors responsible for therapeutic failure in bovine mastitis. Their basic understanding could potentially help Veterinarians in adopting right diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
