Sizing of a Micro-cogeneration System of One Residential Building in Sarajevo

2021
In this paper sizing of a micro-cogeneration system for one residential building located in Sarajevo Bosnia and Hercegovina (BiH) is presented. In the introduction the concept of cogeneration, its advantages and disadvantages, the contribution of cogeneration to greenhouse gas emissions reduction as well as differences between cogeneration and micro-cogeneration are briefly discusses. Further, the application of micro-cogeneration systems is analyzed in detail, as well as the current situation and perspectives in BiH regarding micro-cogeneration. One residential building in the city of Sarajevo is described, where a micro-cogeneration system for simultaneous production of electrical and thermal energy is to be installed. Analysis of the outdoor air temperatures for Sarajevo, the calculation of heat losses for the residential building and factors that most affect the thermal energy demand are given. Daily consumption of thermal energy for the chosen apartment building is given in the form of diagrams. Based on these diagrams and the load duration curve (LDC), the power of the micro-cogeneration unit is chosen. Different operation modes of the system are described regarding the thermal power it works in certain time periods. Calculation of electricity production of the system was done, as well as the electricity demands of the residents of the building. The fuel consumption for operation of this plant is also calculated. Additional costs of the application of the micro-cogeneration system, as well as the savings due to the use of the micro-cogeneration system are calculated. On this basis, economic indicators of profitability for investing in a micro-cogeneration system are obtained.
