Cost and benefits of flexibility measures for integrating 60 GW wind and solar capacity in Turkey by 2026

2019
Trend of increasing investments in wind and solar power will continue as their investment costs decline. Transformation of power systems with higher shares of wind and solar energy comes with operation challenges as electricity generation from these technologies is variable and uncertain. Integrating more wind and solar energy to power systems requires more flexibility enabled by options such as strong transmission grids, flexible generators, interconnector capacity that allows for electricity trade with neighboring countries, demand-side management strategies, energy storage, and improved techniques for energy planning and forecasting. This study presents methodology and results of cost-benefit analysis which are performed for different flexibility measures for efficient integration of 60 gigawatts (GW) wind and solar power capacity in Turkey's transmission grids by 2026.
