La sperimentazione di tecnologie innovative del '900: criticità e processo manutentivo attraverso l'osservazione del Mercato Ittico di Luigi Cosenza (Napoli 1929-30)

2004
The Fish Market in Naples, designed by Luigi Cosenza, can be considered as an example of architecture which was constructed with new technologies of the time. The design underlines Cosenza's awareness of industrial production development and his involvement with the use of new products and materials in architecture. This work explores the criteria used by the architect to select new technology: for example, glass-concrete was incorporated in the facade, shed and reticular beams to support the weight of the great central vault. This technology allowed for the realization of the proposed design according to its spatial configuration and building performance requirements. The research also identifies the critical aspects of modern architecture (such as the susceptibility of walls that are free from ornaments to be damaged by rainwater), verifying that deterioration is mainly due to the lack of maintenance, as well as successive transformations to the original project.
