Innovative materials and pavement design including the use of environmentaly sustainable products: case study at O R Tambo international airport

2010
This paper reports on the use of innovative design methodology including the use of environmentally sustainable products at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) over the past eight years. As supported by various cases studies presented herein, this innovative design approach has been verified by the excellent performance of various pavement structures over this 8 year period (e.g. heavy duty taxiways, haul roads, aprons etc). It is also shown that the use of proven (e.g. Reclaimed Asphalt) and new (e.g. Carbon Black) environmentally sustainable products, combined with innovate designs, offer significant cost advantages (±20%) when compared to the conventional products and design methods. Additional benefits included ±25% reduction in CO2 emissions and a considerable saving in virgin construction materials.
