Surface self-assembly of hydrogen-bonded frameworks

2021
Abstract The assembly of molecules on surfaces to create two-dimensional networks represents an exciting challenge that mirrors concepts developed in crystal engineering. The application of supramolecular synthons to the design of crystalline arrangements represents a valuable tool in creating such two-dimensional assemblies. This chapter focuses on the use of hydrogen bonding synthons and reveals some of the complexities associated with working in two-dimensions and on surfaces in comparison with more traditional crystal engineering. This chapter will illustrate how the use of scanning-probe microscopies allows molecular resolution of assemblies and the advantages and disadvantages of working at the molecular level.
