Technology Transfer From Bench to Industry: Closing Loop

2021
Abstract The chapter discusses the concept of technology transfer from bench to industry in context of circular bioeconomy. Technologies using waste sources, as an example, to produce value-added products have been discussed with their economic and environmental benefits. Scale-up parameters are important for transferring a technology from bench scale to pilot scale and industrial scale. For a successful transfer of a technology, several other factors need to be also considered including economic feasibility, market demand, location of the industry, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, recycling of materials from waste in order to “close the loop,” or recovery of energy from waste. Waste disposal should be phased out, and, where it is unavoidable, it must be adequately controlled to be safe for human health and the environment. This chapter also discusses challenges in the transfer of the existing technologies and measures to be taken by scientists, engineers, policymakers, and government for a successful technology transfer.
