Ondesigning SNMPbased monitoring systems supporting ubiquitous accessandreal-time visualization oftraffic flowinthenetwork, using lowcosttools

2005
SNMP isthewidely useddevice specific monitoring method. Withcontinued improvements inthe performance ofSNMP datacollection andserving methods, SNMP-based monitoring isnowmoreapplicable toreal-tine datacollection, beyond traditional network management and trends gathering forcapacity planning. Often, theuserofan SNMPbased monitoring system intends tomakeaselection of variables tobereadoveraduration during whichmonitoring is required, forexample, just togetasnapshot ofsomeresource utilization suchaslinkutilization, traffic class utilization on someselected target routers whenconducting network testing. Insuchcases, somekindofinteractive monitoring system that provides thepossibility tostart andstopmonitoring isoften desired. Theuserofsuchasystem requires anappropriate user interface through whichselections ofwhattomonitor canbe madeon-demand, andreal-time traffic graphs canbedisplayed automatically. Thispaper describes howtodesign SNMP-based monitoring systems, supporting ubiquitous accesss andreal- timevisualization oftraffic flow, using lowcosttools. The concepts presented inthispaperarebackedby our implementation of a toolcalledSVM (SNMP-based Visualization Monitor) forQoSmonitoring viaaccess toQoS MIBsinDiffServ routers.
