Geomagnetically induced current measurement using an integrated magnetometer platform
2018
Geomagnetically induced currents originating from space weather are a threat to electric power system stability and continued operation. Geomagnetically induced currents can cause major blackouts and cascading failures of electric power systems impacting all interdependent critical infrastructure. This research describes an innovative platform for deploying a magnetometer based measurement system to detect and measure geomagnetically induced currents along electric power transmission lines. Application oriented magnetometers are compared, and individual sensor measurements are leveraged to improve overall accuracy of the sensing system. The proposed system offers advantages in accuracy, reliability, and flexibility over existing geomagnetically induced current measurement systems.
