Assimilation techniques of remote sensing measurements into vegetation models: Overview, limits and promises

A state of the art review of data assimilation techniques is presented, with emphasis and examples related to vegetation modelling. Easy-to-read theoretical papers have been selected in all area of data assimilation, most of them however coming from the oceanography field. Examples illustrate the different techniques. Perspectives regarding errors assessment and their use in assimilation schemes are given.
